Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony (SVYS) was established in 1976 when Springfield area schools removed orchestra from their music education curriculums. Concerned parents, music teachers, and musicians formed what was initially known as the Springfield Area Youth Symphony to ensure future generations of youth musicians would have access to a student orchestra program.

Since SVYS's inception, the organization has developed into a comprehensive program designed to educate students as early as third grade with the basics of playing a stringed instrument. As students progress through the skill-based ensembles, they develop musicianship techniques specific to their instrument. SVYS currently offers five levels of youth orchestra, as well as one adult community orchestra. Our most advanced youth orchestra and adult community orchestra are full symphonic orchestras featuring strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony currently teaches more than 250 musicians each week. Rehearsals are located throughout the greater Springfield area.
