Registration FAQ

What is the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony?

SVYS provides a comprehensive program that accepts students with no instrumental experience and nurtures their musical development through high school. We offer full youth orchestras, string-only ensembles, youth chamber music groups, and an adult civic orchestra.

Who is eligible to join SVYS?

Students (beginning in 3rd grade) and adults from Springfield and surrounding communities.

How should I decide which youth ensemble to join before auditioning?

New students should seek advice from their private music teacher or contact SVYS for assistance. The audition excerpts are posted on the SVYS website, where you will also find detailed descriptions of the skill level expectations for each ensemble.

Returning members may wish to remain in the same ensemble or audition for a higher placement. We recommend consulting with your private music teacher or your conductor in making this decision. You will need to choose the appropriate audition excerpts for the ensemble you wish to join.

What is the enrollment process?

1. Determine the SVYS ensemble you wish to join.

2. Register by completing an ‘Intent to Enroll’ form online or mail a paper copy to SVYS.

3. Pay the $25.00 registration fee.

4. If your ensemble requires an audition, reserve an audition time. Auditions are generally offered in the late spring and again in the fall.

5. Prepare for and take your audition. You will be notified of your acceptance and ensemble placement following the audition.

6. Parents are required to attend the Parent Meeting at the first rehearsal.

7. Tuition is due not later than the first rehearsal.

Do I need to take music lessons from a private teacher to join SVYS?

Private music study is highly recommended, but is not a requirement for joining SVYS. We can assist you in finding a private teacher.

Do I need to take an audition?

Auditions are required for these groups:

• Youth Symphony – new and returning members
• Sinfonia Orchestra – new and returning members
• Preparatory Orchestra – new and returning members
• Junior Strings – new members who have not completed Starter Strings
• Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra – new members only

Auditions are not required for these groups:

• Starter Strings
• Junior Strings - students advancing from Starter Strings
• Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra - returning members

How are ensemble and seating assignments determined?

Assignments are made by the ensemble conductors. SVYS encourages all musicians to take pride in their playing, learning, and contributions to the orchestra regardless of their seating. The ensemble conductors consider these factors when making assignments:

• Audition evaluations
• The best educational setting for individual members
• The need for balance among the orchestras and sections
• The student’s maturity and leadership ability
