Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze” follows with a strong feeling of happiness and harmony. Following Bach’s piece, the audience will hear Georges Bizet’s “L’Arlésienne Suites No. 1 and No. 2,” originally written as incidental music for the play L’Arlésienne. The play is a tragic love story and Bizet’s works do a tremendous job depicting the white-hot emotions fueling the story, as well as the beautiful landscape that is Provence, France. We hope to see you there!

SVYS Launches ‘Go Fund Me’ Campaign to Purchase Percussion Equipment

SVYS Equipment Gofundme

Much of the equipment the percussionists use is old, broken, and often not able to be played. SVYS is currently forced to borrow equipment from another orchestra in the area. This was sufficient in the past, but as our organization grows in size and ability, we would like to offer more professional quality equipment to our musicians.

SVYS Equipment Donation

We have prioritized the equipment we need to update our percussion section. We will move down the priority list, and if we are able to purchase all items on the list with funds to spare, we will use additional money to fund tuition scholarships for our musicians requesting financial assistance.

SVYS Mourns the Loss of Former Music Director, Eugene Power

Eugene Power

Eugene Power

Gene Power was the Music Director and Conductor of the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony and Civic Orchestra during our 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons. He was a doctoral student in orchestral conducting at the University of Illinois during that time. Over the two seasons under his baton, our entire program made immense strides in quality and excellence, and our students, families, and musicians adored him. He was brilliant, witty, thoughtful, genuine, and had a commanding presence as a leader and conductor. Not only did he share his knowledge and talent in music with our students, but he taught them about community service through sharing music with others. Last season in particular, thanks to Gene's initiation, we brought our young musicians to perform at local retirement homes and at other community events, as well as putting on "instrument petting zoos" at different sites of the Compass after school program so that more students could be exposed to string instruments. He was a resident of Springfield during our 2014-2015 season, and was an active parishioner at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where he sang in the choir, as well as regularly volunteering at a soup kitchen. He left at the end of the 2014-2015 season to move back to Wisconsin in order to be closer to his family, and return to his original love of teaching in a public school.

All of us at SVYS/SVCO were sorry to see him go, but wished him happiness in his future, which we knew he was on the road to attaining. It is beyond heartbreaking that he was taken from us so soon. We feel very fortunate to have known him, made music with him, and been his friend.

Eugene Power

Eugene Power

Dear SVYS/SVCO Members and Families:

The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony regrets to announce that Mr. Power will be stepping down as Music Director of the SVYS/SVCO at the end of the season. While Mr. Power has enjoyed his time with the SVYS/SVCO and its musicians, he will be relocating from the area due to personal reasons.

The Board of Directors has begun the process of conducting a search for a new Director. We will be asking for assistance and input from member families as well as community stakeholders. Mr. Power has also graciously offered his assistance as well. A timeline will be forthcoming.

We are extremely pleased with the season we have had this year and the growth that has occurred under Mr. Power and Ms. Pressly. We are confident that the organization will continue to expand and prosper with this transition. We look forward to selecting a candidate that will continue to build upon the great work that we have all achieved together.

Renowned Trivia Expert and Emcee Russ Friedewald will host this year's event. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the trivia competition starts promptly at 7:00 pm.

Since Nov. 1 is All Saints’ Day, this year’s theme is “Sinners & Saints!” Costumes are encouraged (but not required). Get ready to show us your knowledge and compete for a cash prize. (We'll even let you buy a mulligan to use on those questions that stump you.) Looking for more ways to win? Then take a chance at our 50/50 drawing!

The cost to participate in this exciting event is only $10 per person, which can be paid at the door or in advance by calling the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony Office at (217) 753-8000 (cash or check only). Have a group of know-it-alls? Tables of 10 may be reserved in advance by calling our office. Drinks will also be available for purchase throughout the evening at our cash bar. Sponsorships or other contributions are welcome. All proceeds will go to support the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony and Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra. We hope you can make it!
