How to Help

SVYS is a not-for profit organization which succeeds only with the financial and volunteer support of its members and the community. Family tuition provides only a fraction of the total operating costs of the Youth Symphony. There are many things you can do to help:

Fund Drive

You can support the SVYS financially by contributing to the Fund Drive. Members will receive information about the Fund Drive in a letter durng the Fall Semester. You may also inquire by contacting the SVYS office.

Volunteer

SVYS is a not-for profit organization which succeeds only with the support of its members and their families. The many activities of the Youth Symphony are planned and carried out by volunteers. Each member family is asked to complete and return the volunteer form at the Family Orientation Meeting at beginning of the year.

We appreciate the help from community members as well. Here is a list of useful volunteer activities and a volunteer form.

Concert Program Display Advertising

SVYS prints a program booklet for every concert. Many businesses and professional offices support the Youth Symphony by purchasing display advertising in these booklets.

Concert Program "Happy Ads"

Give your favorite young musician a pat on the back with a happy ad in the Spring (May) Concert program booklet.

Starter Strings Program

The SVYS Starter Strings Program offers beginning string instruction to students in grades 3-6. Classes are offered in local grade schools.

You can help by:

  • Contacting SVYS and your child's school administration to get a program started in your school.
  • Sponsoring a Starter Strings program in a low-income area school by providing tuition assistance and fractional sized instruments for the students.
  • Becoming a teacher in one of our programs.

As SVYS expands our Starter Strings program, we would like to make fractional-sized violins, cellos, violas, and basses available to the new young students via a rental or loan plan.

Our grade-school students need a smaller instrument for a proper fit. We presently own several of these, but the need is greater than we can supply. If we have these instruments on hand at the time of registration we have found that families are more likely to enroll their students in the program.

If you can help SVYS acquire one of these instruments, please contact Mr. Haglund or the SVYS office. Your instrument will remain in the SVYS inventory for years, touching many hands as each new class of Starter Strings begins its study!

Child-sized violin sets are priced as low as $150. Click here to view examples of these small instruments, and to find a donation form.

SVYS Logo Clothing

2006-07 logo clothing orders are now complete.

Equipment Needs

As the SVYS continues to grow, we have a need to purchase new equipment and upgrade or replace older items. You can help by making a tax-deductible donation targeted directly toward the purchase of an item of your choice. Please contact Mr. Haglund directly for his current priority list. He has established a "wish list" at Woodwind and Brasswind which identifies his most pressing needs. If you find an item you wish to help us purchase, please use this Equipment Donation form.

Rent Sponsorships

In making the move to the Center for the Arts, the SVYS is assuming additional financial responsibilities. We are asking for your support to raise the $310.00 monthly rental fee. Please consider sponsoring a month's rent at the Center for the Arts. You will be helping us provide not only the second floor office, but the three weekly rehearsal spaces, in addition to the performance, meeting, and work spaces we use regularly throughout the year.

Become a Monthly Rent Sponsor by contacting Richard Haglund, Music Director, at the SVYS office or by downloading the Rent Sponsor form. (PDF document)

Endowment

The Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony has established a fund with the Sangamon County Community Foundation which allows members of the public to make charitable contributions to SVYS. Many options for supporting SVYS exist at the Foundation, including estate bequests.

Please call the SVYS office or visit the SCCF website for more information.
