Spring Concert Entertains Capacity Crowd
Maestro Richard Haglund led the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony in its spring concert, "Spring Harmonies," on May 15 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts. The ensembles played to a standing-room-only crowd. The audience warmly welcomed the newest SVYS ensemble, the Starter Strings at Pleasant Plains, and later bid farwell to the graduating seniors. In the finale, the combined Youth Symphony, Concert Orchestra, and Junior Orchestra played Pictures At An Exhibition by Mussorgsky. The concert featured all four large ensembles, in addition to the string quartet, woodwind sextet, and flute quartet. The Concerto Competition winner, Clayton Penrose-Whitmore played Movement 1 of Haydn's Concerto for Violin in G Major. To obtain a PDF copy of the complete concert program, click here.
Devin Hughes, Assistant Conductor, led the Youth Symphony in a performance of Slavonic Dances Op.46, #8 by Dvorak. Mr. Huges will be leaving the Symphony to begin studies in conducting this fall. This concert marks the completion of Maestro Haglund's first year with SVYS. Under his guidance, the ensembles have grown in size as well as musically, and we are looking forward to another exciting season in the fall. Watch this site for announcements of the Fall 2004 audition dates in late August. |
